Assignment 8

Assignment 8
You must write at least 3 sentences for questions 1,2,5, and 6. You should answer in your own words and will need to do internet research to complete the assignment.

1. Go to http://disneyworld.disney.go.com/new-fantasyland/ and look around it a little bit. Now go to http://www.byteland.org/angeloflife. Now why do you think the .com website is more exciting than the .org website?

I think is more exiting because it doesn't involve an organization. It can be anything and is very likely that is not educational. Sometimes .org has information of a specific thing and over all, they tell you what their goals are or what they do.

 2. Why do you think the Disney website has more hyperlinks, advertisements, and other distracting options to click on?

Disney is a very powerful and famous company that knows how to persuade and gain attention of the public, for that reason Disney has more distracting options because its interesting in comparison to an organization that is not that powerful. Also, Disney receives money for ads, because everyone visits that page. Since Disney has so many movies they can have an infinity of options.

3. If you had to construct/create your own webpage from the beginning, what would you want it to be about and why?

I would do it about beauty because many girls would visit it. The webpage could include tutorials, ideas and sections. I would do it because I think its a very interesting topic for girls. I maybe could include a store of beauty product from makeup clothing.

4. How many programmers do you think would have to work with you to make your website possible? Would it seem impossible to construct/create a webpage by yourself? Why?

At least 10 persons, one that updates it and makes the page look cute and feminine. Another who adds a new topic or beauty tutorial, the one who takes care of the online store, and another one that owns it and tells everyone what to do, that would be me. It would be hard but not impossible to construct the page by myself for that reason I would ask for help.

5. What would you want to name your website? Type that name into the web-address bar, is it taken already?

I would name it bellaahora.com, which means "beauty now." It would help girls look pretty in seconds with a lot of advice. It is not taken yet.

6. Explain why webpages with flash videos, images, and color take longer to load than pages with only text?

It takes longer because there is a lot of content in webpages with a lot of things and EVERYTHING needs to load. The best thing for a webpage is to look nice and clean because that way the user stays in. Webpages with so many ads videos and images plus color make the visitor dizzy.

Assignment 7: New York Times Article

In at least 3-5 sentences answer the following questions?
1. What problems does the article mention that children run into when they use search engines?
The article mentions that children have trouble to retrieve information. Because of that reason,  many companies are tying to make searching more easy and clear, not only for kids but also for adults. Kids do not always have the right context for a subject and companies like Google are trying to fix that, in order to get the correct result.

2. What suggestions have been offered for how search engines can improve their product to lessen children’s problems searching?
Companies can improve their search engines, and each one has their own ideas. One of the ways, Google is doing this is by showing related articles and with the Wonder Wheel . Bing thinks is better for kids to find the info they need in pictures. Google also increased the length of its search box and the size of the font. Voice-activated search can also help kids.

3. Do you search using keywords or questions? How does the article characterize these two types of searching?
It really depends on the task or assignment I'm doing to use keywords or questions. The majority of the time I use questions because keywords show me many things related to the topic and a question will give me something related to what I want. The article mentions that to find the information you want, it is necessary to type the right keywords. Kids, tend to ask more questions according to Scott Kim, chief technology officer at Ask.com.

4. Have you tried using images or videos to search? How does the article characterize this type of searching?
I have tried using images to search and find info but I don't like it because the majority have more information than what I want. Some videos are also very boring, I watch only if they are short and clear. The article mentions this help kids because related searches for example, videos can be helpful to children who often focus on their hands and the keyboard when they search and see that space first when they glance up.

5. What advice would you give to Internet search engine developers (like Google or Bing) for how they should improve their product? Do you think any of the improvements mentioned in the article are particularly promising? Why?
Advice I would give is to make pages for example Wikipedia to be more clear. It is so messy you don't even want to click the page and for Google to give you approved and verified information and not what the people think. I think all of the improvements are good because for example I learn different ways and sometimes I need pictures or I don't know what keyword to put in.

Assignment 6: Results of Online Polls

  1. Do you think the results are 100% accurate? Why or why not?  I don't think it was a 100% accurate because not the whole class answered the polls. However, I think my class mates did a pretty good job answering based on their opinions. They were true to their answers in the most part.
  2. How much of an impact do you think the wording of the questions has on the answers you received? It has some impact because they answer based on how clear the question is and their understanding. Still, they were easy questions that weren't hard to answer based on their personal likes.
  3. Did you get the results you expected from your online polls? Why? I did because I know my classmates personality and what they like mostly. I think everybody answered honestly and did not lie.
  4. If you wanted to do an online poll with the students of Tecnologico de Monterrey asking them how much time and effort they spent doing homework this year, what are the steps you would take to complete that online poll? First I would choose a type of poll that works better for answering the question. Maybe an open answer question works better because they can put the number of hours and explain why. Later I would tell each grade to take it to calculate the results at the end.
  5. Do you think online polling could help the administration of Tec de Monterrey find out more about their students? Or do you think that the results would not be accurate? Why or why not? Maybe it could help depending on the question that is being asked. They could get to know a little more of some students but not everyone because in cases of education and teaching many lie.
  6. How do you think the results of your polls would be different if you asked your classmates the questions in person? In person, they can give me way more detail and explain me why they chose that answer, than if it was by a social media etc. Also, they can choose something else that is not included in the answer and that could help me make my polls and questions better.
  7. In what ways do you think online polling using Google Spreadsheets can be improved? Or was it easier to create an online poll than you originally thought? Explain. I think it wasn't hard if its explain correctly. Google Spreadsheets needs more directions to know where to go and that way trouble decreases by a lot in order to work efficiently. It can be improved by a lot, maybe making shortcuts because there is a lot of clicking to get started.
